Description
1 AIMS AND SCOPE In a paper presented at the Third International Conference on the Languages of Scotland (Edinburgh 1991), Professor Christian Kay proposed a comparison of the lexicon of two different varieties of English: Scots and Old English. Her research (Kay 1994) was based on the detailed analysis of two apparently similar, but radically different onomasiological dictionaries: on the one side, The Scots Thesaurus (henceforth ST; Macleod 1990), containing some 20,000 meanings derived via The Concise Scots Dictionary (Robinson 1985), which gives information on earlier stages of Scots from the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue (DOST; Craigie and Aitken, 1931-2002). On the other side, the Thesaurus of Old English (Roberts and Kay 1995), an onomasiological classification of around 50,000 meanings given in the most common dictionaries of Old English for the bulk of lexical items recorded in Anglo-Saxon texts (around 50,000 meanings), created within the context of the Historical Thesaurus of English to compensate for the limits of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED; Weiner 1999) in its treatment of Old English vocabulary.
