ABSTRACT What are the benefits and drawbacks to students of completing homework assessments online, as compared to using the pen-and-paper method? This research addresses this question within the context of multiple-choice homework assignments delivered with pen-and-paper and online methods. This paper presents the findings of three studies. Study One found that students who had experienced both the online and pen-and-paper homework methods, for otherwise similar tasks, strongly preferred the online method. Study Two found that the actual homework performance of students was comparable, regardless of the method used. Study Three generated a list of benefits and drawbacks to students of the online method, and reports that based on student perceptions the former outweigh the latter. This paper concludes that the online method is superior, for both students and instructor, to the pen-and-paper method for conducting simple homework assessments.
