Description
A series of announcements from Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have pushed real-time search centre-stage. "Real time" means that a system updates information at the same rate it receives information. Users assume that all systems operate in real time, but most don't. Real time is easy to say but difficult (and expensive) to deliver. Yet despite the technical hurdles, real-time services are becoming part of the digital generation's online life. Text messaging, tweets and Facebook updates are important because of their immediacy. Length and grammar are less important than "nowness". Trend hunters have been among the earliest users of Collecta (www.collecta.com), Scoopler (www.scoopler.com), and Twitter (http://search.twitter.com) search. Among the companies sitting on the real-time search sidelines have been the Big Three in internet search: Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. In October each of these high-traffic services made clear that real-time search was a priority--the Brobdingnagians had awoken.
